AGREENWALD: Hi, is this Anthony? This is Andy Greenwald—I’m the writer you talked to the other night at the Dashboard Confessional show at CBGBs. I was wondering if you and your friends are still up for talking with me.

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: Absolutely. Howie and Ian are over here so we could talk now.

AGREENWALD: Great! Is IM ok, or would you prefer the phone or email?

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: IM is better—that way we can all express ourselves.

AGREENWALD: OK. So who am I talking to?

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: Anthony Lombardi, 16, student, Plainview, LI. Howie Kussoy, 17. Ian Bauer, 17. Justin Bolobanic, 17.

AGREENWALD: You guys seemed really into the show. What is it about Dashboard that you relate to so strongly?

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: His lyrics touch you and you can relate to every word he’s saying. Through anytime, good or bad, you always feel like he’s gone through the same thing and it’s comforting. We are in the process of experiencing many situations right now involving love and life and the way he uses metaphors and beautiful lyrics to express himself is amazing.

AGREENWALD: Would you mind sharing something from your personal life that the music of Dashboard Confessional helped you with?

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: This is Howie. I had a situation a month ago where I was in love with my best friend and was contemplating whether to tell her or not. I was in my car driving one day thinking about it when the Dashboard song “Living in Your Letters” came on. It hit me that I had to tell her—the lyrics spoke to me like a lifelong friend. I got extremely emotional.

AGREENWALD: What happened?

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: Well, I took Chris’s advice and told her how I felt.

AGREENWALD: Anyone else?

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: This is Ian. Many little situations were stressing me out and as usual I was listening to one of my Dashboard CDs to help me cope. I’ve had a crush on this girl for a long time and we kissed about a month ago, but since then she’s been acting stand-offish. One line in a song struck me differently than ever before: “and your taste still lingers on my lips like I placed them upon yours/and I starve, I starve for you.”

AGREENWALD: How did hearing that line make you feel?

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: It was comforting just to hear Chris sing—I was able to put out all of the emotions I had been building up as I sang along as loud as I could.

AGREENWALD: You guys certainly were involved in the concert. How would you describe a Dashboard show?

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: Being in the atmosphere with Chris, listening to his music while seeing the emotion on his face really shows that the songs mean as much to him as they do to us. It’s an experience unlike any other. Feeling all of the positive vibes that circulate through the air and the coming together of so many different types of people—it’s just a remarkable thing and a great feeling.

AGREENWALD: You guys, I can’t thank you enough.

SAVESTHEDAYFAN85: It’s been our pleasure! We appreciate the chance to express our feelings about him.
